Linum seed pods in a natural Victorian Volcanic Plains grassland

    Did you know?

Less than 1% of Victoria’s original grasslands have survived. These incredible ecosystems, home to unique species like the blue-banded bee, are rapidly disappearing.

    Victorian Volcanic Plains

The Volcanic Plain were formed by lava and ash from volcanoes millions of years ago. These grasslands once covered over 2.3 million hectares and were filled with hundreds of different plants, including grasses, orchids, lilies, and wildflowers.

    Where are the grasslands?

This map highlights the beautiful grasslands where the photos in Billie’s book were captured. Some are remnant grasslands in the Victorian Volcanic Plain, and some are areas which have been restored by people who love these grasslands.

Can you find where you live in this map? Are there any of Billie’s favourite spots near you?

    What can we do?

Start by sharing Billie’s story! Buying the book or running this resource in your local school is a powerful way to raise awareness about Victoria’s endangered grasslands.

Every copy helps spark curiosity in young minds and builds understanding of the precious ecosystems right in our own backyard. Plus, all profits go directly to the Grassy Plains Network, a local group actively working to protect and restore what little remains of these unique landscapes.
